HC RACE 4 (Race Officer -  Oliver Shaw)

A hugely exciting race not least because of the interesting conditions, westerly changeable F4 gusting F5/6.  Indeed the type conditions the racers love.  Four boats contested the race , David and Brian in a club Wayfarer, KevQ and John in Kev's Enterprise, both decided not to shorten sail unlike both the GP14's of Peter J and Kev F (with jib) and Jim and Steve (reefed main).

The westerly brought an interesting L shaped course in order to give a windward start and  was well placed not to favour either tack, the with tide starboard tack had a possibly less favourable wind than the port against tide tack. All got a good start except Jim who lost jib tension (and arguably the race) before the gun and made a poor show at the gate.  The Wayfarer  led the Ent and they all pulled everything in to a tight starboard tack. KevF took the other road and immediately tacked to port, the gamble seemed to pay off and with good progress to the windward mark was undone by losing the rudder overboard and losing 2nd place to the Ent.

David needed no invite to clear a decent lead from the field and rounded the course without drama (I think). KevQ put in a solid performance in probably the most disadvantaged boat of the day and despite losing the tiller out the stock a few times was in a good second position at the end of lap one.

Further steering difficulties afflicted KevF and Peter enough for the Ent to abandon the chase and hail the safety boat over, a decision he would later regret.

Second lap, despite some appalling gybes at the downwind mark KevF and Peter managed not only to avoid capsizing but to close on the Ent, to take second place by one second on corrected time. But no surprise at the finish David and Bryan, a comfortable win. Jim and Steve bringing in the tail, all boats finished, which is some achievement in the conditions and technical problems. Well done guys good sailing, I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as me.

A big thanks to the support crew, Howard, Oliver and Tom, a well run race, fantastic fun.

HC RACE 3 (Race Officer -  Oliver Shaw)

An exciting race between Tom's Laser Stratos Keel and and KevQ's Enterprise.  Completing a superb textbook start the Ent made good progress to the windward mark and closr in on the inshore downwind leg which which was sheltered from the easterly wind drew over 6 lengths ahead of the Stratos. Extending the lead gradually to over 10 lengths by the 2nd lap all looked lost for the Stratos, but end of lap2 and holding out mid river and with lucky steady gust on the midriver windward leg the Stratos layed the windard mark and rounded to complete the finish line exactly 1 minute (actual time, 12 seconds correct time) ahead of the Ent to win. Great start for Tom and his new boat.

1st - KF/TD Stratos  1815/1089x1000= 1667

2nd - KQ/SLG Ent  1875/1117x1000= 1679

HC RACE 2 (Race Officer - Tom Workman)

Very light wind conditions, in fact so light as that you could see the reflection of the sails on the river as the only ripples where caused by the boats themselves!

A very much shortened course saw John and Colin clear off on the downwind leg despite Kev and Paul putting in a good show to the windward mark. Bad luck was to strike as Colin mistakenly picked up a paddle and was rewarded with  a DNF.

Due to the only boat able to finish the course scoring a DNF the race was abandoned.

DNF - JLG/C? Ent(PN1117)

DNF- PD/AD Wayf(PN1101)

DNF- JL/SLG GP14(PN1127)

DNF - KF/NF GP14(PN1127)

Paul is becalmed

Kev and Nathaniel after picking up a penalty give up and each lunch

Colin enjoys a victory lap

Jim gains a rapid increase in downwind speed
