New Book Published

The Mersey Basin Campaign have published a book called Mersey: The River That Changed The World. Our Commodore Tom and his wife Kath have contributed and ensured that LSC features in the book. To visit the website click >>BOOK<<. You can view the interview in the 'People' section or turn your sound on and listen to Tom & Kath by clicking the 'Listen' link. You can even buy a copy of the book there.

LSC Has a Snooker Table

Along with enough furniture and equipment to really help us out, when OGDENS finally closed their factory in Liverpool they also donated a full size snooker table. Now that posed the problem of getting up stairs in the clubhouse, when at that time we didn't have a stair case! So with some expert block and tackle rigging by Bill Whiteside and some sailing knots by Howard Youdan (they didn't trust my power-boaters granny  knots - phil) and some brute force from Gordon, Jim and Phil we did it.

We all agreed it is not coming down again!

Winter fishing from LSC

Although things were a little disjointed due to bad weather, inconvenient tides, slipway access etc there were a number of successful fishing trips last winter.   If you haven't already seen my report on the Club website the details are there. >>REPORT<<

I'm taking the present wife (otherwise known as the Fishing Permission Officer) on holiday in November, returning on 21st, so should have accumulated the necessary brownie points to get the boat out fairly regularly after that.  My trips will mostly be on Sundays, although if an opportunity presents itself at any other time I may go midweek.  I normally launch about 3hours before high water and return 2 hours after.  I have a full set of keys for the club and am happy to organise access for members who haven't.

I can be contacted as follows :-

If you are interested in pursuing the cunning cod this winter feel free to get in touch but please note this applies to LSC members only.  If anyone else wants to bring their boat they will be very welcome but will have to join the club first.

Regards

Howard

LSC and Youth Afloat clean up!

The last weekend of September saw a massive clean up of the beach and the whole of LSC area. This was all part of Mersey Basin Week and really made a difference to the whole area. For photo's of the day please click this image.

Mersey Basin Campaign Baton Relay

July this year saw a celebration of how clean the River Mersey is now. The Mersey Basin Campaign organised a baton ( a wooden salmon to celebrate the return of salmon to the river) relay along the whole length of the river with various organisations taking part. LSC had the honour of the last leg to deliver the baton to the Mayor of Liverpool.

NEWSLETTER  DISTRIBUTION

As previously advised,  now that we have members regularly coming down to the club,  in an effort to cut costs we are asking members in the normal course of events to collect their Newsletters from the Clubhouse,  to save something on the very considerable cost of postage.   We will only post to those members who cannot reasonably be expected to collect their newsletters in person;   this of course automatically includes members in two very important categories,  many of whom are amongst our oldest and most loyal members  -  those who are now prevented from coming to the club because of either old age and infirmity or because they live much too far away.   For members in these categories we will of course continue to post their Newsletters,  but others who have a special reason for wanting it posted will need to request that and indicate a reason,  so that their request can be considered.

We are also aware that some members prefer to read the Newsletter online,  and we would encourage that,  while also recognising that others much prefer the printed version. However those who read it online do save us the cost of their share of the printing. When a new issue is published we will therefore normally aim to place a modest stock in the Clubhouse,  on a scale rather less  than one per household,  and will then top up as necessary.

YOUTH AFLOAT CANOES LAUNCH AT LSC

Youth Afloat, a new organisation for 13 - 19 year olds has been formed as a separate organisation with LSC and MYTC as the overseeing bodies. A group of very keen young people have joined so far and formed their own committee. They have successfully obtained some grant funding and have already purchased some equipment. Recent activities include canoeing at LSC and please click on the 'thumbnail' pictures below to see the photo's full size.

Youth Afloat have their own web page, please follow the link on the Home page or click >>HERE<< to see their current news and to find out the full details about them.

Unfortunately a similar canoe to the ones above was stolen from LSC. Details of the serial number etc will be published ASAP and circulated to all sailing clubs in the UK.

WE HAVE POWER!

In line with our aims to build a carbon neutral green building a new wind turbine is now installed, working and generating electricity. This system was funded by the North West Development Agency and this has really demonstrated their commitment to the North west coastline.

A couple of pictures of the turbine and  the battery system Click on the thumbnail pictures to view them full size.

H.M REVENUE & CUSTOMS RECOGNISE LSC

Our application to H.M. Revenue and Customs to be registered as a Community Amateur Sports Club has been successful and our charitable and community based aims have been recognised. This status gives us certain benefits and also allows many donations to LSC to be treated as 'gift aid' so we can reclaim tax on the donation. This is a great bonus to our fundraising efforts. If you would like further details please contact Lscsecretary@hotmail.com .

LSC bring Blokarts to the North West

Blokarts are extremely safe land yachts capable of speeds in excess of 50mph! Liverpool Sailing Club are the proud owners of the first Blokarts in the North West of England. Our partners MYCT  trained the first group of instructors and the scheme is starting its second year. Local schools will be putting their kids at the helm again and we now have the facility for disabled people to experience 'the thrill'! Obviously it is hoped that some of the people who experience Blokarts will want to try 'real' sailing or watersports and ensure the future of our sport.

A new special Blokart section will be added to the website soon.

For all information on Blokarts, including how to get your school involved and even how to purchase Blokarts
