‘Youth Afloat’ is now 3 months old! And our young people are now up and running, wanting to make a constructive impact on the world. Their interests – alongside school, college, and EXAMS – are largely water based. They like all things to do with water and are prepared to work to achieve. Who are they? Where are they? Mostly from Garston and the south end of the city. Some come directly from LSC, some are volunteers with our affiliated organisation, the MYCT Outdoor Adventure Centre in Woolton, others help with local Cubs, or Scouts, some come from church youth groups and others are unattached. Word is now spreading. Many more will soon be coming on board. They call themselves ‘Youth Afloat’ and have formed their own committee. They hope to become self financing*. Aged between 13 – 19 years, they are writing up their own club rules and have a surprising (to some) amount of talent between them. In response to government initiative they were successful in applying for a pump-priming grant from the Youth Opportunity Fund; as a result they are now the proud owners of a 14 foot Zodiac inflatable rescue boat, together with a small fleet of canoes, two sea-going. MYCT are providing them with training facilities on a 5 ton Eventide cruising yacht called Liverbird. Money has been set aside to assist the funding of training courses to members. Altogether they are off to a flying start and are very keen to gain the necessary training and qualifications. They have got together a team of Senior Advisors in a variety of water disciplines and clearly are treating sailing on the Mersey with the greatest respect. They intend to enjoy water fun and adventure in safety Watch this space! Like LSC, they’re just starting to take off! Barnacle Bill Safety Officer ‘Youth Afloat’ |
