COD FISHING ON THE MERSEY

As the long, hot barbecue summer draws to a close (Well that’s what the weather men called it!) thoughts are already turning to the prospects for winter fishing in the river.

As the Mersey has become progressively cleaner over recent years the fishing has improved beyond all recognition.  Nobody would have believed a few years ago that we would have a thriving charter fleet operating throughout the winter with excellent catches of a wide variety of fish being caught.  During the winter the main target is cod, with double figure fish being reported regularly from various marks in the estuary. Results at Seaforth, Wallasey and several places on the Liverpool side are well publicised.   What is not so well known is that these areas are easily reached from LSC.

In addition to these places the area further upstream, shown on the chart as middle deep, is also worth trying.  This has the benefit of being much easier to fish, as it is shallower and with less current than elsewhere.

For people who haven’t fished the river in winter it is strongly recommended that you launch in company with someone who has.  In addition to the Club advice on safety equipment you will need warm, dry clothing, a good anchor (You won’t catch anything if it drags), uptiding gear and lots of black lugworm.

Looking forward to seeing you on the water and if you are interested in boat angling on the Mersey and aren’t a member of the Club then it’s probably time you joined.  Details can be found elsewhere on this website.
